The Department of Computer Science is excited to be a research partner in a new artificial intelligence institute backed by the National Science Foundation, joining institutions nationwide to advance the next generation of AI-powered solutions for mental health.
Dartmouth joins the multi-institutional AI Research Institute on Interaction for AI Assistants, or ARIA, as its center for “use-inspired” research. Based at Brown University, ARIA is supported by a five-year, $20 million NSF grant.
Through the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health, and in collaboration with the Departments of Computer Science and Cognitive Science, Dartmouth will lead cutting-edge work integrating AI, wearable sensors, and mobile devices to deliver personalized, context-aware mental health support.
"I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting nationwide research initiative to transform mental health care," says Andrew Campbell, the Albert Bradley 1915 Third Century Professor in computer science. “The new NSF AI center will enable our computer science students to help build next-generation AI," he says. I’m particularly excited about embedding behavioral sensing from smartphones and wearables into large language models to support a new generation of mental health sensing and support”.
