On the limits of mathematical models

How much of the world is it possible to model?, asks Dan Rockmore, professor of mathematics and computer science, in his recent essay for the New Yorker. 

"Math can help us shine a light on dark worlds, but we should look critically, always asking why the math is so effective, recognizing where it isn't, and pushing on the places in between," he writes.
